The College of Mechanical, Chemical, and Materials Engineering (CoMCME), in collaboration with the College of Applied Natural Science (CoANS), has officially launched a five-day training on ISO/IEC 17025:2017—the international standard for laboratory competence. Organized by the Ethiopian Accreditation Service (EAS), the training is taking place from February 24 to 28, 2025, and aims to enhance the quality and reliability of laboratory testing and calibration processes.

The opening session was presided over by Dr. Shimels, Dean of CoMCME, who emphasized the critical importance of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 certification in ensuring high standards of accuracy, consistency, and credibility in scientific and engineering research. In his remarks, he stated, “This training is a significant step toward strengthening our laboratories and aligning them with international quality benchmarks. Mastery of this standard will enhance our research impact and industrial collaborations.”

Participants from both colleges will engage in interactive sessions led by experts from EAS, covering key aspects of ISO/IEC 17025:2017, including laboratory management, quality control, documentation, and assessment procedures. The training is expected to equip faculty, researchers, and technical staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement best practices in laboratory operations.

By the end of the training, attendees will have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory accreditation requirements, reinforcing ASTU’s commitment to fostering excellence in research and innovation. This initiative marks another milestone in the university’s continuous efforts to enhance academic and industrial research standards.
