 Background of the Program

The program of Electrical Power and Control Engineering (EPCE) is one of the three departments in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computing of Adama Science and Technology University. The current Electrical Power and Control Engineering program of Adama Science and Technology University emerged as the Electrical/Electronic Technology Program of the former Nazareth Technical College (NTC) when the College was established in 1993. Since then, the program had gone through a series of curricular changes and the program continued until the commencement of the Electrical Engineering degree program and finally to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Now with the new direction of ASTU, it is renamed as Electrical Power and Control Engineering Department.

The Electrical Power and Control Engineering program teaches profound knowledge in basic science of Power Engineering and Control Systems. The program offers undergraduate degrees in the core areas of Electrical Power and Control Engineering and graduate programs in the areas of Power System Engineering, Control Engineering and Power Electronics and Drives. All of the graduates will be with considerable experience in practical application of their skills while gaining comfort and familiarity with research. The Electrical Power and Control Engineering program curriculum is developed to accommodate the demand of innovative, highly-skilled, practice-oriented, entrepreneur, and ethical manpower in the various fields of Electrical Power and Control Engineering. The core strategy of the program is to pursue its vision and mission to enhance its research, linkage with industry, academic and scholarly activities and become a center of excellence for its programs, thereby improving its eminence in national and international rankings.

In line with ASTU’s initiative to implement outcome-based education, all programs revised their curricula in accordance with ABET accreditation standards. The EPCE program formed a curriculum committee to lead this revision, and updated the curriculum in 2020. Since then, notable accomplishments include defining and publishing Program Educational Objectives (PEOs), adapting and publishing Student Outcomes (SOs), mapping ASTU’s mission to PEOs, aligning PEOs with SOs, and linking SOs to Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs). Further achievements involve the preparation of detailed course syllabus, engagement with an Industry Advisory Panel (IAP), identification of human and physical resources, compilation of course portfolios, and the evaluation of CLOs and SOs.
