⚡ Department of Electrical Power & Control Engineering (EPCE)
Introduction
The Department of Electrical Power and Control Engineering (EPCE) is dedicated to training engineers who can power Ethiopia’s future. As one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, Ethiopia requires skilled professionals to support its ambitious energy expansion, renewable integration, and industrial automation needs.
Electrical Power and Control Engineering combines power systems, electrical machines, control theory, and power electronics to ensure reliable energy supply and efficient industrial processes. Graduates of this program are prepared to contribute to Ethiopia’s national development agenda, while also being competitive in the global engineering landscape.
Background of the Program
The program of Electrical Power and Control Engineering (EPCE) is one of the three departments in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computing of Adama Science and Technology University. The current Electrical Power and Control Engineering program of Adama Science and Technology University emerged as the Electrical/Electronic Technology Program of the former Nazareth Technical College (NTC) when the College was established in 1993. Since then, the program had gone through a series of curricular changes and the program continued until the commencement of the Electrical Engineering degree program and finally to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Now with the new direction of ASTU, it is renamed as Electrical Power and Control Engineering Department.
The Electrical Power and Control Engineering program teaches profound knowledge in basic science of Power Engineering and Control Systems. The program offers undergraduate degrees in the core areas of Electrical Power and Control Engineering and graduate programs in the areas of Power System Engineering, Control Engineering and Power Electronics and Drives. All of the graduates will be with considerable experience in practical application of their skills while gaining comfort and familiarity with research. The Electrical Power and Control Engineering program curriculum is developed to accommodate the demand of innovative, highly-skilled, practice-oriented, entrepreneur, and ethical manpower in the various fields of Electrical Power and Control Engineering. The core strategy of the program is to pursue its vision and mission to enhance its research, linkage with industry, academic and scholarly activities and become a center of excellence for its programs, thereby improving its eminence in national and international rankings.
In line with ASTU’s initiative to implement outcome-based education, all programs revised their curricula in accordance with ABET accreditation standards. The EPCE program formed a curriculum committee to lead this revision, and updated the curriculum in 2020. Since then, notable accomplishments include defining and publishing Program Educational Objectives (PEOs), adapting and publishing Student Outcomes (SOs), mapping ASTU’s mission to PEOs, aligning PEOs with SOs, and linking SOs to Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs). Further achievements involve the preparation of detailed course syllabus, engagement with an Industry Advisory Panel (IAP), identification of human and physical resources, compilation of course portfolios, and the evaluation of CLOs and SOs.
Rationale of the Program
Electrical Power and Control Engineering is a cornerstone discipline in the transition toward sustainable development and industrial modernization. Ethiopia is undergoing a massive transformation in its energy and industrial sectors, and this program responds directly to that demand.
Why this Program Matters
- National Energy Growth: Ethiopia’s investment in hydro, solar, and wind energy requires highly skilled engineers to design, operate, and maintain advanced power systems.
- Industrial Automation: As industries modernize, control systems become central to productivity, reliability, and safety. EPCE graduates will lead in designing and managing such systems.
- Global Alignment: With global trends moving toward smart grids, renewable integration, and Industry 4.0, the curriculum ensures students remain relevant and competitive internationally.
- Academic Responsibility: To minimize the gap between technological advancements and education, the curriculum undergoes continuous review and aligns with ABET standards.
Key Features of the Program
- Comprehensive Curriculum – Balanced coverage of electrical power, machines, electronics, and control systems with strong theoretical and practical foundations.
- Hands-On Laboratory Training – Access to specialized labs, including Power Systems, High Voltage, Control Systems, and Renewable Energy, ensuring real-world skills.
- Alignment with Global Standards – Curriculum benchmarked against ABET and international engineering standards, ensuring competitiveness worldwide.
- Focus on Renewable Energy & Sustainability – Emphasis on modern energy technologies such as solar, wind, and smart grids to address Ethiopia’s growing energy needs.
- Technology-Integrated Learning – Computer-aided design, simulation tools, and automation software incorporated into coursework and projects.
- Industry-Relevant Exposure – Summer internships, industrial attachments, and project-based learning that connect students with real-world challenges.
- Versatile Career Pathways – Preparation for careers in power generation, transmission and distribution, industrial automation, research, and consulting.
- Future-Oriented Training – Strong foundation for postgraduate studies, innovation, and entrepreneurship in energy and automation sectors
This approach ensures that graduates are not only versatile professionals but also future-ready innovators, capable of solving Ethiopia’s pressing energy challenges and supporting sustainable industrial growth.
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)
