ASTU Celebrates International Women’s Day: Be Bold for ChangeWritten by Super User
The community of Adama Science and Technology University celebrates International Women's Day with the slogan of the year “Be Bold for Change” on March 25, 2017 at Cafeteria No. 1 conference hall. On the occasion, Mayor of Adama City, W/ro Adanech Abebe along with other officials from Adama public offices was invited as guests of honor.
Dr. Lemi Guta, President of Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) in his opening speech said that International Women's Day is a global Day celebrated to strengthen the attention given to gender main streaming in the social, economic, cultural and political achievements. He recalled that in the past, women were highly oppressed and ignored to exercise their equality in several aspects of their life. He mentioned that practices of oppression and inequality stimulated women to become more vocal and active in the campaigns they held for their right.
Mayor of Adama City, W/ro Adanech Abebe shared her life experience to outstanding ASTU female students and other participants of the occasion. She explained that the government has made much effort to realize gender equality in Ethiopia. In this regard, significant changes and attitudinal shift have been noticed throughout the society.
W/ro Alganesh Tolla, a researcher and PhD candidate at Holeta Agricultural Research Center was also invited as a role to share her experience on research, community service, innovation and leadership activities. She said that she produced 26 publications, 9 journal articles, 9 conference proceedings, 1 short communication, 2 research reports, 1 manual and 4 books as teaching packages.
ASTU Gender Affairs Office has awarded about 150 female students who scored good grade in the first semester of the current academic year across all Schools.
