In Ethiopia, the pharmaceutical industry has been selected as the top priority sector in the second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II) with the expectation of facilitating the industrialization of Ethiopia through pharmaceutical manufacturing and consequently substituting significant amounts of importing medicines with domestic products. As a result, the development of the pharmaceutical industry may improve the accessibility to essential medicines and consequently improve the overall healthcare quality and also human productivities for other industrial sectors in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is one of the first African countries to develop a national strategy for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Industry of Ethiopia have planned and announced the National Strategy and Plan of Action (NSPA) for pharmaceutical industry development in Ethiopia (2015~2025).
