Transportation is the lifeblood system for the economy of the country. Ethiopia is a landlocked country and is very much dependent on road and railway transportation. The demand for highway and rail transport is growing at a very high rate largely driven by double-digit economic growth. The Ethiopian government has recognized this important factor and is planning to roll out a transportation infrastructure overhaul in the Ethiopian Growth and Transformation Plans (GTP I & II). These plans are following the footsteps of Ethiopia’s decades-long effort to improve its transportation infrastructure and lift the country out of its vicious cycle of poverty. These plans aim to foster domestic technological growth and ultimately produce the required transportation infrastructure such as vehicles and rolling stocks to meet future demands.
