CESE Laboratories

CESE laboratories

Due to the fast development in the area of CESE, it is desirable to modify the organization of CESE flexibly according to the situation. Thus, unlike the other four CoEs, laboratories, four research labs along with one testing and prototyping room plus two collaborative rooms are organized.

Power Control & Energy Laboratory

The research in this lab mainly electric power (e.g., energy transmission and distribution, power generation, etc.) and researches in diverse fields through equipment simulators related to the optimization of energy connection networks, especially in Ethiopia. In addition, it is expected to carry out research topics such as smart grid, power quality, and high voltage system. The equipment in this lab mainly includes Electrical Power System Simulator, Modular Automatic Process Control and Instrumentation System, and Real Time Digital Simulator.

Industrial Machine Laboratory

This lab focuses on the study of electric motors and their application fields and investigates the problems to be solved in the design of an electromechanical topology. This includes new industrial machine topologies such as slot-winding motors, synchronous reluctance motors, and research topics such as permanent magnet machine design. The equipment in this lab mainly includes DC and AC Motor Drives, Wind Turbine, Servo Mechanism for Permanent Magnet Dc-Moter, and PLC Trainer and Simulator.

IC Fabrication Research Design and Characterization Laboratory

In this lab, the research and development related to semiconductor device characterization and design will be considered. The development of these semiconductor devices required analytical characterization techniques to verify the behavior of the added impurity. The equipment in this lab mainly includes an Oxidation dry and wet furnace with RTA tube and a Thin Film Deposition system for CVD. Further, equipment such as probe stations and B1500A are also available for the measurement of semiconductor devices.

PCB Design, VLSI and Embedded Design Laboratory

The aim of this lab is to design, simulate and fabricate of PCB, and design VLSI circuit in digital and analog domain. The equipment in this lab mainly includes Nano Dimension DragonFly 3D printer, FPGA evaluation boards (VC707, etc.), LPKF ProtoMat for PCB prototyping, and high-speed digital oscilloscopes.

IoT Technology Laboratory

The research conducted in this lab, mainly IoT smart solutions such as smart city, smart homes, smart self-driving cars, smart agriculture, smart health, smart grids and energy management, etc., and telecommunication research infrastructures. The required equipment mainly includes TRACTUS3D Industrial 3D printer-T3500, TVC Long Range Multi-Sensor Thermal Camera, Keysight M9393A PXIe Performance Vector Signal Analyzer, 5G Network Mobile Field Testing, and disdrometer.

Intelligent and Autonomous System Laboratory

The research in the area of intelligent data analytics and autonomous system development shall be mainly considered: develop methodologies for the analysis, design, and control of autonomous systems, with a particular emphasis on large-scale robotic networks, autonomous aerospace vehicles, and healthcare industries. Large-scale data analytic problems that arise in different application domains and disciplines will also be considered. The equipment in this lab mainly includes various drones, various humanoid robots, heart disease prediction tools, and brain-computer interfaces for virtual reality.

Cyber Security Laboratory

This research lab is engaged in research and development on cybersecurity technologies to counter the threat of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks and contribute to the safety and security of society. The equipment in this lab mainly includes HP desktops, workstations, and Cyber Security Software tools.

Software Innovation Laboratory

In this lab, the research and development in the software and hardware drive system will be considered. The equipment in this lab mainly includes HP desktops with special dimensions monitors.

Server Room

The server room should be equipped with server computers for workgroup, research, and supporting equipment. Even in the case of power outages and unexpected disasters, it is necessary to have high reliability of the backup power supply that can continue to operate the research equipment and server room. Thus, the equipment in this room mainly includes PowerEdge R940xa Rack Server, Deep Learning Sever, Advanced Servers, and Uninterruptible Power Supply.
